Leave your essay in a word doc., print it, and turn it in to me tomorrow! *Remember: A personal essay tipically combines both elements of a narrative and a memoir, but not strictly one of those. Since insight about life or a personal belief is usually based upon both experiences and relationships that have taught you what individual values are most important. I will the link to the "This I Believe" site at the bottom of this assignment so that you can brainstorm and check out the site. **Tonight, write down some ideas that have always made you think or some morals that you have lived your life by. Post these on your wiki. Remember to think about the statements influential people have said to you (dads, moms, grandmas and grandpas, teachers, coaches etc.). Then, tomorrow drop your file (Titled with last name only) into the drop box. In the file you should have: 2 JPEG photos (not in word doc.) & the final draft of your article in a word doc. (4/26/11) You must do the following in your outline (prewriting) for the article: 1. Topic of your article in several sentences which include a working title and synopsis 2. What is the tone of your article (think back to our talk about tone)? Write about the tone you plan on taking on your article; defend your choice by including the notion of 'because'. In other words, explain why you think that tone would be sufficient and include how you plan to create the tone. 3. What is your X-Factor? An X-Factor is something that makes your article unique based on a perspective or insiders information. The X-Factor gives your article 'Voice' and makes it interesting to read. What is your X-Factor and why? 4. List a bunch of key facts you know or need to research. This can be a bulleted list if you wish. Be specific and gather your info in this spot. Don't worry about order as you can figure that out as you write your article tomorrow night! 5. What is your personal connection to this topic? Write a little about this as you should include such information in your article (written tomorrow night). 6. The Skinny refers to a sentence or two that gives the reader the 'skinny' or scoop on your article. This works as an overview. Write the skinny draft here on line 6 (you will probably need to revise it later on) 7. How will you organize your article tomorrow (chronological, cause and effect, etc.)? Look up organizational patterns to check your options (google it). Ir's for the weeks of 4/25-5/3/11- This is the LAST set of IR's!!! This week you will be focusing on conflict. Here is a refresher on the elements of conflict that we covered last week: Conflict is the dramatic struggle between two forces in a story. Without conflict, there is no plot. Internal conflict: A struggle that occurs within a character's own mind (trouble making a decision, dealing with mixed feelings or emotions) External conflict: A struggle that occurs between a character and an outside force (another character, a community, forces of nature, etc.) There are 4 main kinds of conflict: Character vs. Character- This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with another character, human or not human. Character vs. Nature- This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with the forces of nature, which serve as the antagonist. Character vs. Society- This type of conflict has the main character in conflict with a larger group: a community, society, culture, etc. Character vs. Self- In this type of conflict, the main character experiences some kind of inner conflict. 1) Identify what one conflict that has taken place in your book so far. Tell what characters were involved, the cause and effect of the conflict, and cite an example from the text that shows the conflict. 2) Explain what type of conflict this is. Internal or external- explain how you know. Explain what the character is battling and how you know that.
